Situated in the northwestern part of Maharashtra, the city of Nasik, also known as Nashik is one of the four holy tirthas or'crossings' charmingly placed on the banks of the sacred Godavari river dotted with several ghats and temples.

 

The city is a revered place known for being a famous pilgrim center of the Hindus, attracting millions of devotees who come to take a dip into the holy water and remit sins.

 

Also known as the 'wine city', it has a picturesque element to it with the pleasant climate, vibrant markets on the river banks, the evening aarti, the numerous sadhus chanting shlokas and the awesome scenary of the Sahyadri range adding elements of mysticism.

 

Spiritually, culturally, mythologically, Nasik is attractive. This Western Kashi of India studded with caves, temples, interesting mythological stories, industries, festivals and religious fairs which make it a popular tourist destination.

 

During the reign of the mighty Satavahna dynasty, Nasik was the capital. It had earned the reputation of being a prominent trading post to the west.During the Mughal era, it was renamed as 'Gulshnabad'. But when the Peshwas took over the reign of the city in 175, it got back its old name. But in the year 1818, the Peshwas lost the city to the British.

 

The year 1869 saw the formation of Nasik Municipality and it was accorded a new status in 1869, when Nasik was converted into a full-fledged district added with 13 'Talukas'.

 

In the history of India's freedom struggle, Nashik's name has been written in golden letters. It was here the non-cooperation movement started by Mahatma Gandhi got its momentum. In the year 1932, the temple entry movement to abolish untouchability and the mass movement started by Dr. Ambedkar was launched in Nasik.
